Hallstatt

The village of Hallstatt was off the beaten path, but Steve insisted that we find this little spot, tucked in the mountains of Upper Austria. We were glad that he did! Hallstatt is a small town of less than one thousand people. Until the 1900's it could only be reached by boat. It's production of salt dates it back to prehistoric times, with remains dating from over 5,500 years ago. Now there are narrow streets to explore, but it wasn't long ago that the only way townsfolk on the river bank could travel from one home to another was by boat or the "upper path" which was a small corridor passing through private attics! It took less than ten minutes to walk from one side of the town to the other, but we fell in love with it as we did. In fact, Hallstatt is so picturesque, a Chinese mining company recently built a full scale replica in China!
We found another delightful European playground in the shadows of this quaint village, providing the most picturesque spot to play.

For centuries no roads . . . and then your 9 passenger van.

What an adorable town! I have always heard of the Celts having ruins in Hallstadt from many thousands of years ago. I wonder if that's the same place. I love that first photo, diagonally split between the mountains and the town homes. You are such a talented photographer, Camille! Mom
