Dresden

As we headed from Berlin to Prague, we stopped in Dresden. The city was once considered the Florence of the East, which is evidenced by the beautiful architecture throughout the town. However, in the final months of WWII the Allied Forces fired bombed the town. 25,000 people died essentially overnight and over 90% of the city center was destroyed. Only recently has the city been rebuilt. We found a little cafe in the center of the town and while the kids were waiting for their meal, I ran off to find a photo of the remains of the city after the bombing. We all were  dismayed by the photos, destruction and loss of life that took place in this beautiful city.
The Church of our Lady was almost completely demolished. The remains were left as an anti-war memorial and it wasn't rebuilt until 2005. At this time, much of the original materials were used to recreate the church.
We only got a glimpse of Dresden, but it was enough to leave an impression that will not soon be forgotten.

What beautiful pictures of the Dresden church! Dad and I loved Dresden. There is a wonderful art museum there, with paintings by Old Masters like Reubens and Titian. Dresden was also a favorite city of your Grandpa Calder, from before the war. Mom
