On Foot

Our last day in Rome was spent on foot. We wandered from piazza to piazza from morning to night. Our first walk was out of the city to see the Sebastian Catacombs. We walked the historic Appia Way, past Italian Celebrity homes and little fields with sheep grazing. Our reward was a tour deep into the catacombs. We were not allowed to use our cameras, so our memory of slots dug out of the walls ten deep, a little dirt chapel for early Christian worship and the former tombs of the first popes will have to suffice.
We then walked to the Campo Fiora Market and picked out pasta to cook back at our apartment and a huge bag of assorted dried fruit that we ate sitting under a huge statue in the center of the market.
Our next stop was Piazza Navona for the famous tartafou chocolate dessert. We wandered the beautiful piazza, sat around the fountain and watched the artists.

We then walked to the Pantheon and awed at the beauty and grander of its huge dome.

Our next stop was the Borgese Gardens. The thrill of the day was a wild ride on a nine passenger bike, with Dad behind the wheel. We rattled up the hills of these picturesque gardens, rolled past fountains and Roman's out for an evening stroll and then nearly flew down it's uneven, bumpy roads back down. We knew that we were a sight when people stopped to take photos of us! We stopped for sunset photos on a hill perched above Rome.

After our tour of the gardens we walked to the Captoline Museum and Michelangelos Piazza with views of the Forum lit up.

We then found dinner in the most charming, and happening, neighborhood in Rome, Trastevere. It's cobblestone streets and tiny piazzas wound us around and around until we ended up at a little pizzaria. After dinner we stopped for a quick photo of the Mouth of Truth, the lion featured in Roman Holiday. As tired as could be, we found our subway, which was always so colorful, and took our ride back home.

Trastavere and the Borghese Gardens--those are top items on my list to see. It sounds like they were highlights for you. I'm so glad you got to the Catacombs, Pantheon, Capitoline Hill, and Plaza Navone--all favorite Roman spots of mine. What a great photo of the whole family on the nine-person bike! Love, Mom

Rome is such a party. Jonny and I also enjoyed Piazza Navona, Appian Way, and the 'colorful' subway trains... although we unfortunately missed out on the 9-passenger bike.
